I've never not been obsessed with something.

Well, okay, that's not entirely true: I have gone through downtimes where the interests that drive me are temporarily off the map, or too tangled up in external associations to get my mind going freely. That would be called depression.

How do other people live again? ;-)

That would have to be the typical "Bullies can't bother you if you ignore them!"

Or the various times I've been told to join the military (no disrespect to people in the military, I'm just personally not cut out for it for various reasons, including being a pacifist and innately contrarian.)

Bad advice really does seem to abound in all of our lives; good advice does, too. More, sometimes bad advice is obvious even when one doesn't take it, and other times it's only by hindsight. This is an interesting question as these things go, and I'm enjoying reading random people's responses to it.
