'K, guys: even if you are personally opposed to abortion, I urge you to fight this.

As it says here- this would outlaw birth control and criminalize miscarriages.

It would also criminalize IVF and, bizarrely, menstruation in sexually active women - given that much of the time fertilized eggs do not implant, it would mean that a failed attempt to get pregnant would constitute manslaughter.

This is where we get to with lack of science education, folks. The fact that someone can write something like this and try to pass it without apparently having ever seen a biology class just makes me want to cry. Can we please make an amendment to the national constitution requiring politicians to pass a goddamn high-school level test on any subject they're trying to legislate about?

That would solve so many problems right there...

Sigh.

Okay, so I don't usually do this, but this is an issue near and dear to me and this is getting very little no attention in the mainstream media.

Mississippi is voting on November 8th on whether to pass Amendment 26, the "Personhood Amendment". This amendment would grant fertilized eggs and fetuses personhood status.

Putting aside the contentious issue of abortion, this would effectively outlaw birth control and criminalize women who have miscarriages. This is not a good thing.

Jackson Women's Health Organization is the only place women can get abortions in the entire state, and they are trying to launch a grassroots movement against this amendment. This doesn't just apply to Mississippi, though, as Personhood USA, the group that introduced this amendment, is trying to introduce identical amendments in all 50 states.

What's more, in Mississippi, this amendment is expected to pass. It even has Mississippi Democrats, including the Attorney General, Jim Hood, backing it.

The reason I'm posting this here is because I made a meager donation to the Jackson Women's Health Organization this morning, and I received a personal email back hours later - on a Sunday - thanking me and noting that I'm one of the first "outside" people to contribute.

So if you sometimes pass on political action because you figure that enough other people will do something to make a difference, make an exception on this one. My RSS reader is near silent on this amendment. I only found out about it through a feminist blog. The mainstream media is not reporting on it.

If there is ever a time to donate or send a letter in protest, this would be it.

What to do?

- Read up on it. Wake Up, Mississippi is the home of the grassroots effort to fight this amendment. Daily Kos also has a thorough story on it.

- If you can afford it, you can donate at the site's link.

- You can contact the Democratic National Committee to see why more of our representatives aren't speaking out against this.

- Like this Facebook page to help spread awareness.

(ETA: It may not actually be as bad as it sounds, as per comments below. On the other hand, I'm not sure I trust the government not to take an "alternate proof of citizenship" form and turn it into required information for everyone, so this post stands. Emphasis caps taken off accordingly, though.)

Jayeeeezus. WTF.

I know people from China - as in the PRC - who have traveled outside of the country, and I don't think they generally get this much shit.

How many of you know who the physician was who attended your mother at birth? For pre-natal and post-natal care? AND THE DATES OF HER DOCTOR APPOINTMENTS? Yeah. Um. How about every address you've lived at in your entire life? Here is a copy of the goddamn form.

Do we really want to be turning into Soviet Russia right now?

This is reminding me that I need to get my Canadian dual citizenship verified (I'm eligible because my father was born in Quebec.)

Thanks to The Doctor for the heads up.

Three requests:

1. Get a passport soon, if you're a US citizen and don't already have one. (ETA: This may not be as critical as believed - see comments - but I still think it's a wakeup call.)

2. Comment on this: Here. It closes on April 25th, so do it NOW.

3. Signal boost.

Anywhere: Go into a Starbucks tomorrow and tell them you've voted and get a free cup of coffee -- verified on the Starbucks website.

NYC or Seattle: Go into a Babeland sex toy shop and tell them you've voted and get a free vibrator or wank toy.

Pass it on!

Our economy is now pwnz0red by China. (And Japan, the Cayman Islands, Luxembourg and Belgium. But mostly China.)

If I haven't got my bucks and kuai twisted up, this has to do with several things. China has been investing heavily in US currency bonds in order to keep the RMB from rising too quickly against the dollar, among other things. This has the interesting side effect of China owning a lot of bonds --> China being the top holder in Fannie Mae/Freddie Mac --> China (and other countries) holding a lot of US debt and thus getting to influence economic policy, very heavily, the way your car dealership could influence your economic policy if you defaulted on the payments...

I think it's really sort of stupid funny that American jingoism and the waste it caused has resulted in, essentially, foreign ownership of our financial system.

*facepalm*

As long as they don't repo our air quality, I'm not panicking.

If you keep doing what you are doing, you will keep getting what you have got: An interesting post by [livejournal.com profile] jrfrench, linked by [livejournal.com profile] alostrael, on what the Left is doing badly wrong. I'm not sure it fixes that easily, though. What our opponents are doing does not generally seem to be so much genuinely listening as appearing to do so, ala NLP and similar clever verbal tactics.

In any case, the post is a perspective worth reading and/or discussing.
